Seoul is the fourth largest city in the world. Its population is currently a booming 10 million within the CBD and a whopping 25 million including metropolitan areas. Also known as Sugawon, it is the capital of South Korea, and therefore, people want to live there. The population density in South Korea is incredibly high. This is because it is filled with skyscrapers and high-rises. There is a density of: 11,255 people per km2 44,691 people per mi2 This city holds 50% of the entire population of South Korea (at 2013). But how does this stack up to other megacities? Let’s look at Tokyo, Jakarta, and Delhi’s population and compare it to Seoul’s. Tokyo: 37.9 million Jakarta: 30.3 million Delhi: 26.4 million Seoul: 25.6 million Tokyo: 6030 Jakarta: 10500 Delhi: 11050 Seoul: 11255 This is very interesting. Tokyo has the largest population, yet it has the lowest density. This is because Tokyo has a very large area. The chart also shows that Delhi and Seoul are very similar. This is also quite interesting as Delhi is incredibly underdeveloped, and yet has very similar statistics. What does this say about Seoul? It says that Seoul should think more about its position in the world and live up to it. Lower its population density, and maybe spread out a little more. |
